Huobi Joins Russian Financial Services Platform to Share Notes on Crypto Regulation
Cryptocurrency exchange Huobi has joined Russia's VEB Innovation Fund to share notes on crypto regulation, according to a fund's press release published Wednesday, September 19.

VEB Innovations CEO Vladimir Demin explains that Huobi expertise will help create "a legal basis that could compete with current promising jurisdictions."
Huobi Exchange's Plans for Russia Go Well Beyond Crypto Trading
"We started from projects on blockchain without using tokens or cryptocurrencies," Demin said. "But we understand that using this technology only in a non-token way is like jumping half-way over the abyss."

In August, Huobi signed up with the VEB's Center of Digital Transformations and has been providing expertise that will be adapted for Russia by local experts and used in the development of future regulation in the country, Demin said.

Russia's state-owned bank backs blockchain
"Russia had two options for its technological development," said Vladimir Demin, head of VEB's blockchain competence centre. "It could have chosen to try to catch up with countries that were already far ahead in technology, which was a feasible way, but not a very interesting one.

"If we had chosen, for instance, to catch up with paging technologies back in the 1990s, we would have eventually caught up, but this would have led us nowhere. No one uses pagers any longer."

According to Demin, Russia chose to focus on upcoming technologies that are new everywhere, such as blockchain, quantum computing, artificial intelligence and big data. It is in these areas that VEB intends to be at the forefront of technological innovation.
